The Salon Professional Academy Blog

Earlier this month, everyone here at TSPA St. Louis made the exciting transition to L’Oréal Professionnel Products and to being a L’Oréal Professionnel school. It is a thrilling change for us, and one that we are very excited to share with our loyal customers, as well as spread through the community as we train students in this amazing product line.
The change, however, does not come without its own baggage, and misconceptions. One of these is the assumption that by switching to L’Oréal, we are switching to a product that is available on supermarket shelves.
This is very much not the case.
If you, like many people, aren’t sure about the differences between professional lines and their supermarket counterparts, never fear. We have done the dirty work for you and have a quick overview to help you understand the difference and help you make the best decision for your hair.

Drugstore Brands

Drugstore shampoos and conditioners are the go-to choice for many, and it’s very easy to understand why. With their low cost, and prominent marketing, many people find them appealing. But these easily attainable products can also be filled with chemicals that can strip your hair, as well as wax that might make it feel smooth, but in reality that conditioner is only leaving a residue on your hair. In addition, they are packed with water or other fillers that will make those easily affordable options run out quickly, sometimes negating the supposed savings altogether.

Salon Brands

As expected, the high-end versions of these brands are concentrated and filled with high-end ingredients that are lacking in some of the scary things that drugstore brands are full of: like wax, alcohol and sulfates. Because they aren’t bogged down with water, they last longer and the higher quality ingredients help your hair to shine and not remove as much of the healthy sebum from your scalp.

When we said quick overview, we meant it. But never fear, we have also created a handy checklist for you to take to the store the next time you need to refill your shampoo and conditioner so as to help you find the best possible brands.
